Our Dream of a Spa Comes True!
In 2011, Virginia (Ginger) Somerville-Grant and Sara Somerville moved back to their hometown of Orange, Va., to realize their life-long dream of being successful entrepreneurs and owning their own business together. There was never a question that the business would be a Day Spa, as Ginger had owned a spa in Florida (O2 of the South Florida) and Sara had been a national trainer for a major beauty company. In March of 2011, Hamilton’s Day Spa was born in historic Orange, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, right in the heart of Virginia’s Wine Country.
Hamilton’s began as a quaint two-room spa, offering manicures, pedicures, massages and facials. We out grew our space within 8 months! Recognizing the demand for additional wellness /spa services, we moved to a larger location in the historic Silk Mill building, where we added yoga classes and additional aesthetic rooms and services. It was in the new yoga classes where Ginger met Dr. Karl Beier, who at the time owned Med Spa of Va. In January of 2014, Hamilton’s Day Spa purchased the Med Spa of Virginia.
Today, we have realized our dream of becoming a total wellness center by offering Med Spa, Day Spa and Salon services. Offering state of the art, anti-aging, body contouring, injectables, as well as the best day spa experience and we are also proud to say we are home to Central Virginia’s only Vichy Shower. In 201__, we out grew our spa and moved into a beautiful 10,000 square foot space located in the Silk Mill complex to make the dream bigger and better for you.
Since then, we have expanded staff to include seasoned hairstylists, a certified nutritionist, yoga instructors, as well as specialists in manicures and pedicures. Our dream is keeps growing thanks to our customers! Total wellness, head to toe, inside and out. We invite you to come share our dream with us.
The Silk Mill
Milton Rubin, a Yankee entrepreneur looking for cheap labor, posted a call in the New York Times looking for a southern town interested in developing a silk mill. When asked why he chose Orange County, his reply was that, “The people here were so nice to me.” American Silk Mills Inc broke ground in 1928. The combined cost of building and machinery was reported to be more than half a million dollars. The Mill has its own water tower and approximately 6 acres of land.
Shortly after the mill opened, the Great Depression began in October of 1929. Because of the American Silk Mill farms were saved and a community was left intact.
Beyond helping local farms and families survive the depression, the American Silk Mill provided a product vital to our nation’s success in WWII. American Silk Mills Inc was the nation’s largest producer of silk for parachute cloth during the Second World War. Three shifts of employees working 7 days a week were part of the war effort. More than 1000 employees took part in the project which won a Presidential Citation for their part in making parachutes.
But true to form and unlike many abandoned mills on America’s east coast, the property was purchased in 1989 by visionary local entrepreneur Kent Higginbotham. Since then extensive renovations have been made to accommodate the various businesses currently located in the Mill.
